BALI
Tanah Lot Temple, on the
way to East Java…
Stop off at another Hindu
temple,Pura Rumbut Siwi in Bali. No one there except us.
We were made to wear
sarongs and saches before entering the grounds…
The ferry crossing from Gilimanuk to Ketapang (East
Java). A whopping 65c ticket…
EAST JAVA
The Ketapang
Indah Hotel…
Nearby Chinese temple in Bangyuwangi…
IJEN PLATEAU
The sulphurous smoke of Ijen crater…
On the crater rim…
The crater
lake next to the sulphur mine…
Sulphur is mined from
within the crater…
The miners carry up to
100kg of sulphur per load…
It’s a long way down to
deliver the sulphur…
Weighing their takings…
This guy had 90kg in his
load. It’s a 2hr walk down from the
crater where he’ll sell the sulphur.
He can expect less than
10c/kg for his efforts. That’s around $7
earnings for his 4 to 5 hour round trip…
Lunch and kopi susu (white coffee)…
A pretty little town
amongst the coffee plantations of the Ijen Plateau…
These cheeky boys weren’t
the shy type…
Around Bondowoso…
Drive-thru orange juice…
Dessert roti – kachang kachang. Bread smothered in butter and filled with
peanut paste.
It won’t make you live
longer, but it was worth it…
The road to Cemero Lawang/Mt Bromo…
Mount Bromo
The Sea of Sand with Batok (right) and Mt Bromo
(left)…
Bromo’s smoking crater…
Edelweiss offering to the
volcano…
More kopi susu from the entrepreneurial
ladies…
Back across the Sea of
Sand via ojek (motorbike taxi)…
Sunrise…
The walk up to Mt Pananjakan…
Another ojek to get down…
This little dude was
keen, but when it came to the Sea of Sand, it all went pear shaped…
The height of fashion…
