On our way from the UK to Oz, we spent 3 months in South America visiting Argentina, Chile, Bolivia & Peru.

The map shows the route we took, mostly by bus complete with bingo, whisky, wine & champagne. When we’d had enough of buses, we took the odd flight and even a ferry (once!).

ARGENTINA

          Buenos Aires

The La Boca area of Buenos Aires  The colourful Caminito Street and home of the Boca Juniors football (soccer) club.

Parrilla (pronounced parish’a) is the famous Argentinian barbecued beef.

          Iguazu Falls

After an 18hour bus journey (the first of many) from Buenos Aires, we arrived at Puerto Iguazu.

Iguazu Falls, on the border of Argentina, Brazil & Paraguay is breathtaking.  The area consists of over 300 falls, rivalling Niagra in its size.

This little creature is a coatie, an ant eater type thingy…

The first of many delicious South American beers.  At 30p, or 70c for a litre, it’s hard to go wrong…

          Back in Buenos Aires

Another 18hour bus to return from Iguazu.

Japanese gardens in BA…

Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Peron is buried…

          Patagonia

We flew to El Calafate, southern Argentina, in the heart of Patagonia to visit the Perito Moreno glacier.  Just coming into winter, the temperature got down to -15degC.

This river is on the verge of freezing over…

Perito Moreno…  the surface area of the glacier is the size of Buenos Aires and the face you can see is over 70m (20 storeys) high.

More parilla…

The frozen forest…

These are icebergs that have broken from the end of the glacier and now frozen in place in the lake…

Ice skating on the frozen lake…

CHILE

          Torres del Paine

From El Calafate in Argentina, this is the bus we took across to Chile… and boy was it chilly in Chile!

Torres del Paine National Park.

These guanaco are part of the llama family.

There are supposed to be amazing mountains to look at… if it wasn’t for the cloud cover…

Back in Puerto Natales…

Then we took a 4 day ferry trip travelling north at a whopping 8 knots through the Chilean islands.  We saw lots of seals, and even caught a glimpse of a whale.  These photos were taken when it was calm… a little later in the trip we were cabin bound!?!?

          Puerto Montt and Valdivia
